Horomia lost for words over benefit reviews

6:08 am on 24 December 2009

Former Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia says he is at a loss for words to describe a Government move on unemployment.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the Government is looking at cutting the dole next year for anyone who has received an unemployment benefit for 12 months and does not meet Work & Income to make a plan to return to work.

Mr Horomia says it's a sick Christmas present for Maori who are

disproportionately represented in the dole queues.

He told Waatea News that young Maori are not on the benefit because they want to be there, but because no jobs are available.
