Labour demands answers on Kabul embassy plans

7:03 am on 12 January 2010

The Labour Party is questioning the need for a New Zealand embassy in Afghanistan and says it wants more information about the Government's plans.

Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson, Chris Carter, says the embassy in Iran is looking after New Zealand's affairs in Afghanistan satisfactorily.

Mr Carter says trying to reassure the United States about New Zealand's active involvement in Afghanistan is not a sufficient reason for spending limited resources there, when embassies are needed in Latin America and Africa.

He says if the Government plans to proceed with the idea, it should say what costs are involved and what security measures will be needed.

A spokesperson for Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says it's too soon to go into that amount of detail.
