Ratana says Labour alliance hangs by a thread

The Ratana Church says its 70 year alliance with the Labour Party is hanging by a thread.

Labour MPs on Sunday visited Ratana pa to meet the church's followers celebrating their founder's birthday.

Labour says it feels secure in its support from followers of the Ratana movement, despite growing support for the Maori Party.

But Ratana's spokesperson, Andre Meihana, told Morning Report that the head of the church, Haare Meihana, is re-evaluating his support for Labour.

Mr Meihana said Labour asked the church's head to put forward his son, Errol Mason, to take the place of Tariana Turia when she left the party, but he has been left at a low ranking on the party's candidate list.

On Sunday, Mr Meihana said that the president had made some requests of Labour that were crucial to his ongoing support. These included high list positions for four Ratana members.

Also on Sunday, Labour said it feels secure in its support from followers of the Ratana movement.

Ratana followers have traditionally been Labour supporters, since an agreement between the church's founder and the Labour Party in the 1930's.
