Maori Party urges appeal of name suppression in porn case

The Maori Party has criticised the name suppression and sentence for a Manawatu man who downloaded more than 300,000 pornographic images, many involving children.

The man was sentenced to home detention for four months when he appeared in Palmerston North District Court on Friday.

The judge who granted the suppression order cited the need to protect the man's family, his mental state, his wife's job and his ability to rehabilitate.

Maori Party MP Rahui Katene says the sentence and name suppression are outrageous and should be appealed so he can never again offend under a veil of secrecy.

Hone Harawira MP says newspapers are littered with the names of small-time criminals, but serious offenders receive protection.
