Labour MPs take to the road over GST

5:42 am on 23 February 2010

Labour MPs plan to hit the road to campaign against the Government's proposal to increase GST.

The Government has proposed raising GST from 12.5% to 15%, compensated for by across-the-board tax cuts and increases in benefits and superannuation.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff says National did not campaign on raising GST, therefore has no mandate to do so.

Mr Goff says the bus campaign will start in Auckland, and will travel the length of the country to inform communities about the implications of any increase.

The tour will begin on Sunday 28 February, at the start of the next parliamentary recess.
