Greens against youth rates of pay

6:17 am on 25 February 2010

Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says a huge rise in young Maori without jobs is caused by the recession rather than lack of youth rates of pay.

A private bill in the name of Sir Roger Douglas of ACT to bring back youth rates was drawn from the ballot on Tuesday.

Ms Turei says getting rid of youth rates was a big win for the Green Party, and it will fight against their reintroduction.

She told Waatea News that many young Maori are doing adult jobs and accepting adult responsibilities.
