PM believes Goff should keep using VIP cars

7:45 pm on 26 February 2010

Prime Minister John Key thinks the leader of the main opposition party should continue to use Parliament's VIP car service.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff has written to Mr Key and the Department of Internal Affairs raising concerns about the high costs of using the service.

Mr Goff says the price has recently gone up to $90 an hour and he will now use cheaper alternatives where possible.

But the Prime Minister says he does not think Mr Goff should have to take that course of action, and as the leader of the opposition in a developed country he should be in a ministerial car.

Mr Key says New Zealanders do not expect MPs to abuse the system and he does not believe that they do.
