Salmon farm could be at risk from electricity reforms

MPs have been told reform of the electricity sector could put the operation of a salmon farm at risk.

Parliament's finance and expenditure select committee was hearing more submissions on the Government's Electricity Industry Bill on Wednesday.

The reforms force the state-owned energy company Meridian to give up control of South Island Tekapo A and B power stations, to fellow SOE, Genesis energy.

Mt Cook Alpine Salmon operates a salmon farm in three canals on the scheme and says the operation is run according to how Meridian controls the water.

General manager Rick Ramsey says Genesis will have different priorities and may decide to withhold water for generation because the spot price is not right, putting the salmon operation at risk.
