Whanau Ora funding a good start, says Sharples

Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples says the Maori Party didn't get as much funding as it wanted for Whanau Ora, but there is enough to start off with.

The scheme will directly target dysfunctional families by funding community providers.

The Waipareira Trust hopes to deliver Whanau Ora in west Auckland. Its chief executive John Tamihere has criticised the Government's refusal to put new money in.

Funding details for the scheme are yet to be announced, but the Government has said it will be paid for out of existing budgets for health, social development and Maori Affairs.

Dr Sharples told Waatea News it would be good to have the Government behind the scheme "full bore", but the Maori Party accepts it does not have spare money as the country climbs out of a recession.
