New criticism of Govt's mining plans

5:28 pm on 27 April 2010

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has attacked the Government's plan to conduct mining on conservation land.

Jan Wright outlines her concerns in a submission released on Tuesday afternoon.

She recommends that the Minister for Energy and Resources and the Minister of Conservation do not remove any of the specified protection areas from Schedule Four of the Crown Minerals Act.

Jan Wright says the information provided to the public falls well short of establishing that the value of the minerals to New Zealand justifies the risk to the conservation value of the land.

The Government has said mining could be done surgically and that things must be done to turn the economy around.
