Electoral finance legislation seen as unfair by Greens

6:09 am on 30 April 2010

The Green Party says new electoral finance legislation unfairly allows unlimited spending by third parties.

The Government has tabled a bill which would lead to new legislation governing election campaign spending being in place for next year's election.

Under the bill, third party campaigning will still be allowed but those spending more than $12,000 will have to register with the Electoral Commission.

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei says that spending should be capped, as an election should be a battle of ideas, not a battle of who has the most money.

She says it's illogical to limit spending by political parties if other interests are not also controlled.
