An agency set up to advise the Minister of Conservation has advised her that it opposes mining in national parks.
The Government has floated a proposal to allow mining on some land that is protected by Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act, which includes national parks.
A letter sent to the minister by the Conservation Authority says the mining industry is concerned only with exploitation and is incompatible with national parks.
It says one can only advance to the detriment of the other.
A spokesperson for the minister says she will not be commenting on the letter.
