The Green Party supports metering big water users.
The Government has announced that water takes of more than 20 litres per second will be metered within two years and takes of more than five litres per second will be metered within six years.
Regulations under the Resource Management Act will come into effect on 1 July. They do not apply to domestic use.
Green Party co-leader Mitiria Turei says water metering is long overdue. She says the Greens have been waiting for this development for about two years.
Federated Farmers also supports the move, but is wary it might come with more bureaucracy.
