Labour Party leader Phil Goff is critical of Prime Minister John Key for not standing by his decision to withdraw SAS troops in Afghanistan.

The SAS is due to end its latest deployment next year, but after a secret visit to Afghanistan, Mr Key has left open speculation the SAS might extend its stay.

Mr Goff says Mr Key was adamant the troops would be returning home, but has reconsidered his decision after meeting the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force, General Stanley McChrystal.

He says any decision about SAS deployment should be made with proper consulation and Mr Key should not be swayed by the opinion of General McChrystal.
