New Zealand's Prime Minister and Defence Minister have both held talks with China's highest ranking military officer.

General Guo Boxiong, who is the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, is in New Zealand on a short visit.

John Key says they had a wide-ranging discussion, including the economy in China and the situation in North Korea.

The general was in Australia last week where he met Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
