Minister to consult on bail law reform

2:43 pm on 22 May 2010

Justice Minister Simon Power will consult this year on reforming bail laws.

A south Auckland man, Tino Felise, was sentenced on Thursday to nine months jail for stealing a car, possession of an air gun and dangerous driving.

All of the acts were committed while he was on bail and facing a charge of murdering liquor store owner Navtej Singh.

Felise was acquitted of killing Mr Singh but convicted of aggravated robbery and jailed for five years for that offence earlier this month.

Mr Power's office says a discussion document will be put out in the next seven months on the bail laws, with resulting legislative change possible before the next election.

People will be asked for their views on a range of issues, including the monitoring of electronic bail and offenders' compliance with bail conditions.
