New bill to overhaul 30-year-old Food Act

A new bill to overhaul New Zealand's 30-year-old Food Act has been introduced to Parliament.

Food Safety Minister Kate Wilkinson says the 1981 law contains regional inconsistencies that need to be addressed.

Ms Wilkinson says more can be done to protect consumers from the significant incidence of food-borne illness in New Zealand and the bill will ensure that businesses take primary responsibility for the safety of the food they are selling.

However, organisers of community-based fundraising activities such as cake stalls and sausage sizzles won't need to jump through hoops, she says.
