Deepwater fishing to get extra funding

9:42 am on 31 May 2010

The deepwater fishing industry is to get a $5 million research boost, taking total Government funding to $17 million a year for the next decade.

The money will be spent on stock assessment, research on the impact of fishing, and tripling the number of fisheries observer officer days.

The Deepwater Group, which represents quota owners, says the industry wants to be the best-managed exclusive economic zone in the world.

It says gradually increasing observer coverage is a key part of that plan, the overall aim of which is to get 100% coverage to ensure that everything fished is accounted for.
