PM writes to Speaker over blind trust

9:07 pm on 1 June 2010

Prime Minister John Key has written to the Speaker in response to a Labour MP's complaint that he misled Parliament over his blind trust.

Dunedin North MP Pete Hodgson claims Mr Key breached Parliamentary privilege when he told MPs that he has no knowledge of what is in the Aldgate Trust.

Mr Hodgson maintains that, although the trust set up to administer the Prime Minister's assets is blind, Mr Key can still see some assets through a separate company, Whitechapel.

Mr Key has responded to the Speaker in writing, saying he has no control over assets in the Aldgate Trust, nor any right to know about or influence decisions about them.

Mr Key also says he has no involvement with Whitechapel.

The Speaker will decide whether Mr Hodgson's complaint is to be referred to the Privileges Committee.
