Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says the Navy's latest ship to develop an engine fault is only going through teething problems.
HMNZS Wellington is the last of seven ships purchased as part of the Project Protector fleet.
It was on its maiden voyage to New Zealand from Melbourne when it developed a coolant leak and had to be diverted to Sydney.
Mr Mapp told Morning Report a ship's maiden voyage is where problems are usually found and he's confident the ship will be okay after it's repaired.
The first offshore patrol vessel completed for the Navy, HMNZS Otago, also had a coolant leak in March while preparing to sail to Auckland.
