Govt announces new science funding

Updated at 2:58 pm on 12 July 2010

Research into freshwater ecology is at the forefront of new science funding announced by the Government.

Forty-two projects have received funding totalling $48 million per year, a third of which goes into freshwater research.

Funded studies include a Massey University project aimed at improving the quality of Manawatu's water ecosystem, and a Landcare Research investigation into the decline of wetlands.

Money is also going to Plant & Food Research, which is trying to create new and distinctive varieties of Sauvignon Blanc wine for the export market.

There's also funding for Fonterra to investigate how to make food products for infants that retain the anti-allergy properties of raw milk.
