Proposed new electoral finance law archaic - Law Society

The Law Society says a proposed new electoral finance law is archaic and would benefit from a comprehensive redraft.

The preamble to the bill says it sets a modern definition of election

advertisement, but the Law Society disagrees.

It says the Broadcasting Act needs to be amended to allow access to radio and television on the same basis as other media.

A member of the society's law reform committee, David Cochrane, says the legislation is still too complex and somewhat archaic.

"It's based on a kind of a 'stand on a soapbox and campaign through the newspapers'. It's not quite up to date with modern life."
