Bill requires Governor-General to pay income tax

8:01 pm on 20 July 2010

A bill that would require the next Governor-General to pay income tax has passed its first reading in Parliament.

Prime Minister John Key says the bill is important and timely.

There is no longer any justification for the exemption on the Governor-General paying income tax, he says, and successive governors-general have asked for it to be removed.

The bill will now be considered by the Government Administration Select Committee.
