Greens push Auckland rail project

The Green Party is attempting to raise public awareness about Auckland's proposed underground rail loop with the launch of a Fast Track campaign on Monday.

The rail system, costing an estimated $1 billion, will run in a loop from Mt Eden to Britomart station with three stations underneath Khyber Pass Rd, Karangahape Rd and Albert St.

Auckland Regional Transport Authority is preparing its business plan for the system in order to secure funding.

Green Party MP Keith Locke says people need to start putting pressure on local body representatives now, before the October elections, in order to keep the transport option a top priority in Auckland.

He says voters should think hard about which politicans will push for the system to be built.
