Law change will allow water to be privatised - lobby group

MPs have been told proposed changes to local government law allow for water to be privatised.

A Parliamentary Select Committee is hearing submissions on the Local Government Act Amendment Bill which will allow councils to extend private public partnerships for water provision from 15 to 35 years.

The Right to Water group, which has about 100 members, says such long-term contracts amount to privatisation.

Maria McMillan told MPs they must look at the implications of the changes on the people they represent.
