Sociologist Carl Davidson has been appointed chief commissioner for the Families Commission.
Mr Davidson will replace Bruce Pilbrow, who has been acting chief commissioner since Jan Pryor resigned in March.
Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says Mr Davidson has a continuing interest in social change and is committed to family issues.
His appointment is for three years.
