Hawkins to stand for Manurewa local board

5:21 pm on 5 August 2010

Labour MP for Manurewa George Hawkins says he will not stand at next year's general election if he is elected to a local board at upcoming local body elections.

Mr Hawkins has put his name forward for a position on a board in Manurewa and has also put in his nomination for the Manurewa electorate seat for the general election.

He says he would withdraw that nomination if he is elected to the local board on 9 October.

Mr Hawkins says he does not want to force a by-election, so would stay on in Parliament until the end of the term.

However, if he is not elected to the local board, he intends to stand for Parliament again.

Mr Hawkins has been the MP for Manurewa since 1990.
