Labour says people in the Wellington region should be worried that Capital & Coast District Health Board chief executive Ken Whelan has indicated pressure to cut services as a reason for quitting his job.
Former Health Minister Annette King says the resignation of Mr Whelan also indicates there are problems with Government interference.
Mr Whelan resigned on Thursday, telling staff he cannot make further cost cuts without having a negative impact on services.
Ms King says the Government has been forcing DHBs to cut so-called soft targets - community health services.
She says she has heard many stories about Health Minister Tony Ryall and staff calling various DHB staff about how to manage issues.
Ms King says such interference is unprecedented and DHBs will now have to make deeper cuts to spending, which will inevitably mean hospital wages.
