Reconsideration of Govt stance on drink driving levels wanted

Waikato Regional Council says it cannot accept the Government's decision to delay making changes to the drink driving limit for another two years.

The council's transport committee supports the immediate lowering of the blood alcohol limit for adults.

In a letter to the Prime Minister this week, the committee urged the Cabinet to reconsider, saying alcohol is a factor in nearly a quarter of all fatal and serious crashes in the region.

It said lowering the blood alcohol limit would held reduce alcohol related crashes.

The Government has delayed a decision on a proposal to lower the blood alcohol limit for adults to allow more research.
