Government to establish identity checking system

4:39 pm on 24 August 2010

A bill to set up an identity checking system for use by public and private sector agencies was introduced in Parliament on Tuesday.

Government agencies can check identities through existing information-matching provisions.

However, businesses are vulnerable to identity-related crime because they can only access the births, deaths and marriages register.

The Identity Information Confirmation Bill, under the name of Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy, will establish a consent-based service to enable identity checking against government databases and registers.
