Govt keeping bad job figures quiet, says Labour

Updated at 7:15 am on 27 August 2010

The Labour Party is accusing the Government of hiding bad unemployment figures.

Social Development and Employment Minister Paula Bennett says almost 43,000 more people received a benefit last month, than in July 2008.

Labour's social development spokesperson Annette King says Ms Bennett waited almost three weeks to release the figures for July to the Parliamentary library, but released figures for March, April and May after a couple of days.

While quarterly unemployment figures are available on the Ministry of Social Development's website, there are no monthly breakdowns.

Ms King tabled the figures for April, May, June and July, saying it would give people access to the statistics.

The website shows Labour also only publicly released quarterly figures.
