MP wants more legislative emphasis on Bill of Rights

10:02 am on 1 September 2010

Green Party MP Keith Locke says more pressure needs to be put on Parliament to produce legislation that is consistent with the Bill of Rights.

He has drafted a member's bill that would make it compulsory for all new legislation to be checked against the Bill of Rights and allow the courts to refer inconsistent law back to Parliament.

Mr Locke says numerous laws have been passed that violate the Bill of Rights, including the recent three-strikes legislation.

He says the changes in his bill would make it harder for that to happen by putting moral pressure on the government of the day.

Mr Locke expects his draft bill to be discussed at a conference on the constitution being held in Wellington later this week.
