9:56 pm on 18 September 2010

Labour members in the Mana electorate north of Wellington have chosen Kris Faafoi to contest the by-election created by MP Winnie Laban's resignation.

Mr Faafoi, 34, a former political reporter for TVNZ, is Labour's chief press secretary at Parliament and chairperson of the party's Pacific branch in the Wellington suburb of Rongotai.

He currently lives outside the electorate but says he plans to move there with his family.

The other contenders for the nomination were business manager Michael Evans, barrister Peter Foster and communications adviser Josie Pagani.

The National Party candidate, already chosen, is list MP Hekia Parata.

While no date has yet been set for the by-election, the Labour Party says Mr Faafoi's campaign will begin on Sunday.

Ms Laban, who has held the seat for Labour since 2002, is resigning to take a job as Assistant Vice-Chancellor Pasifika at Victoria University.
