Labour Party MP Carol Beaumont has requested that the Commerce select committee conduct an inquiry into loan sharks.
Ms Beaumont says the committee has asked her to prepare a draft terms of reference for an inquiry.
She hosted a meeting of community leaders at Parliament on Wednesday, at which they agreed to form a community coalition to raise awareness of the issue.
The MP says the meeting helped to clarify the issues that needed to be addressed with an inquiry and she will refine the terms of reference and take them back to the committee shortly.
