Harawira wants tougher tobacco industry report

8:01 pm on 14 October 2010

Te Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira says the draft report of the Maori Affairs select committee inquiry into the tobacco industry is the low-tar rather than full-strength version.

Mr Harawira says that when he returns from a trip to Canada he'll push his colleagues to harden the report so it focuses on the effects of tobacco on Maori, rather than treating Maori as an afterthought.

He told Waatea News that over nine months the committee has heard from medical professionals, health groups, smokers, their families and the industry, so it's in a strong position to make recommendations that can lead to real change.

Mr Harawira says the MPs have a once-in-a-generation chance to make a difference.
