PM open to new role for Prendergast

Less than 24 hours after Kerry Prendergast lost Wellington's top job, the Prime Minister says he would not rule out finding a role for the three-time mayor.

On Wednesday Celia Wade-Brown was named Wellington's new mayor after special votes were counted, clinching a narrow victory over Ms Prendergast.

John Key says he is unsure whether Ms Prendergast, who stood unsuccessfully as a National list MP in 1999, has any new ambitions to re-enter national politics.

But he says there could be an opportunity along the lines of a board appointment for the former mayor of nine years.
