A bill that aims to prevent all prisoners from voting has passed another hurdle in Parliament.
Under current law, a prisoner serving a sentence of more than than three years is not allowed to cast a vote.
The National MP, Paul Quinn, wants that extended to all prisoners.
His member's bill passed its second reading in Parliament on Wednesday night, with the support of the National and ACT parties.
Maori Party MP Hone Harawira told the House on Wednesday the legislation is a direct attack on the democratic freedoms of people that Parliament should be trying to help.
