Speaker to seek place as list MP in election

4:04 pm on 27 October 2010

Parliament's Speaker Lockwood Smith has announced he will seek a place on the National Party's list at next year's general election, instead of standing for re-election in his Rodney seat.

Dr Smith says his Speaker responsibilities mean it has been more difficult to be involved in political debate.

He says the people of Rodney will be able to select a new member who will be better able to voice their views on wider political issues.

Dr Smith says he will continue to help his constituents and push major roading projects in Rodney.
