Defence shake-up 'missed opportunity'

8:57 pm on 2 November 2010

The Green Party says the Defence Force shake-up announced on Tuesday is a missed opportunity for New Zealand to chart a more independent course in its defence policy.

The white paper sets out plans to consolidate army bases and make some defence roles civilian jobs, with savings from those changes used to boost the combat capabilities of the army and navy.

Australia is named as New Zealand's principal defence and security partner, and New Zealand is described as an engaged, active and stalwart partner of the United States.

Green Party defence spokesperson Keith Locke says it harks back to the days before the breakdown of the ANZUS agreement.
