The Labour Party candidate for the Mana by-election says more help for low and middle income families would stimulate the local economy.
In a discussion on Morning Report Kris Faafoi said Labour's policy of removing GST from fresh fruit and vegetables would save the average family $250 a year.
Mr Faafoi said money given to low- and middle-income New Zealanders would be put back into the economy because they are spending on necessities, and help support local businesses.
National's candidate, Hekia Parata, said she will support small to medium businesses operating in Mana so they can build on an already existing strong economy.
She said it's time for a chance as Labour has held the seat for 75 years, and pledged to be a stronger voice for the electorate.
The other candidates are Colin du Plessis (ACT), Kelly Buchanan (Alliance), Julian Crawford (Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party), Jan Logie (Green), Matt McCarten (Independent) and Sean Fitzpatrick (Libertarianz).
Voters go to the polls on Saturday in the by election caused by the resignation of Labour MP Winnie Laban, who left Parliament to take up a job at Victoria University.
Voters urged to enrol
The registrar of voters for the electorate says many locals, especially young people, have yet to enrol.
Toni Weir says Friday is the last chance to register, so anyone who has not yet received an EasyVote pack should enrol - or update their details.
