Travel entitlement for holidays to go, says Smith

Parliament's Speaker, Lockwood Smith, has confirmed that current MPs will no longer be able to use their travel entitlement to take taxpayer-subsidised holidays.

Dr Smith made the announcement on Wednesday after a meeting with senior MPs.

Pressure has been building for the perks to be scrapped following the resignation of cabinet minister Pansy Wong over misuse of the entitlement.

Dr Smith met the Parliamentary Service Commission, which is made up of representatives from each of the parliamentary political parties. It is chaired by Dr Smith.

Parties across the political spectrum have already said they support the axing of the international travel perks.

A Radio New Zealand political reporter says the outcome of the meeting will help the Remuneration Authority decide what should happen next.
