New electoral laws progress through Parliament

New legislation governing electoral spending and donations has passed its second reading in Parliament.

Several changes were made to the electoral finance legislation by the select committee that considered the bill, and heard public feedback.

That includes a spending cap of $300,000 on third-party election campaigns.

Originally there were to be no limits on how much lobby groups could spend in the three months before an election.
