MPs reluctant to have all funding details revealed

7:22 am on 8 December 2010

MPs say they are happy to have an independent body set their parliamentary entitlements, but are still reluctant to make all of the details public.

The Government will change the law so that the Remuneration Authority will set MPs expenses, allowances and support services, as recommended by the Law Commission.

The commission also says the Parliamentary Service, which administers the payments, should be subject to the Official Information Act.

The Green and ACT parties support the body being open to public scrutiny, but others are less enthusiastic.

The National Party says further consideration would be needed, and the Labour Party says it would be concerned if details about party leaders' budgets were publicised.
