Prisoner voting bill passes final reading

10:05 pm on 8 December 2010

A bill that removes from all prisoners the right to vote has passed its final hurdle in Parliament.

At present, any prisoner serving a sentence of more than three years is not allowed to vote in elections.

But the members' bill, The Electoral (Disqualification of Convicted Sentenced Prisoners) Amendment Bill, extends that to all prisoners.

The bill, put forward by National MP Paul Quinn, passed by 63 votes to 58 on Wednesday night.

National and the ACT parties voted in support.
