Productivity Commission enshrined in law

9:31 pm on 11 December 2010

Legislation has been passed setting up a new commission to provide advice to the Government on improving productivity.

The New Zealand Productivity Commission Bill was passed under urgency on saturday night with the support of National, ACT, United Future and Labour.

The commission arose out of ACT's support agreement with National. ACT leader Rodney Hide told Parliament the commission will be a source of new ideas on improving productivity.

The bill was the last of a dozen pieces of legislation debated under urgency since Thursday evening, and after it was passed, Parliament rose for the night.
