Greens want Govt to reaffirm anti-nuclear policy

The Green Party is calling on the Government to reaffirm its commitment to New Zealand's nuclear-free policy.

Among United States diplomatic cables passed by the WikiLeaks website to The Sunday Star-Times is one describing Prime Minister John Key as having a strongly personal pro-American outlook.

The Green Party says that description is concerning.

Foreign affairs spokesperson Keith Locke says New Zealanders are proud of their anti-nuclear stance and don't want the Government to barter it away for a free trade deal.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister says there's been a clear commitment to keeping New Zealand nuclear-free and nothing has changed.

However, Labour Party leader Phil Goff says Mr Key has done nothing wrong by keeping the fully restored intelligence relationship between New Zealand and the United States a secret.

Mr Goff says intelligence issues are rarely disclosed to the public.
