Former MP Louisa Wall has been chosen as Labour's candidate in the electorate of Manurewa.

She will be the party's replacement for George Hawkins, who is not standing at the next general election.

Her selection was confirmed on Sunday night after a drawn out process in which she beat six other nominees. There were seven candidates and voting began at about 2.30pm.

Mr Hawkins is not standing at the next general election after securing a position on an Auckland Council board.

Ms Wall says she is the party's first Maori and first female candidate in any south Auckland electorate.

Mr Hawkins told Morning Report he is very happy with her selection.
