Labour selects Twyford for Te Atatu

The Labour Party has selected list MP Phil Twyford as its candidate to replace the long-serving MP, Chris Carter, in the Te Atatu electorate.

Mr Twyford, who was Labour's Auckland issues spokesman, beat seven other candidates for the role.

He says he is deeply honoured to be chosen from such a talented pool of people.

Other contenders included former Labour candidates Hamish McCracken and Kate Sutton, and list MP Rajan Prasad.

Mr Carter won Te Atatu with a majority of 5300 votes in 2008.

He was expelled by Labour's ruling council in October over his attempts to undermine the party's leader, and is currently an independent MP.

Labour Party President Andrew Little says Mr Twyford has had two years experience as an MP and was an excellent spokesperson during Auckland's super city process.

Mr Little says Mr Tywford has been involved in the Auckland region, and in particular the Te Atatu electorate, both before and after Mr Carter was dismissed.

He says he has full confidence in Mr Twyford winning the seat for Labour in next year's election.
