Maori Party still wants iwi tests made easier

4:15 pm on 21 December 2010

Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia says the party is still negotiating to make the tests easier for iwi to claim customary title to the foreshore and seabed.

The tests in the Marine and Coastal Area Bill include a requirement for continued exclusive occupation or use since 1840.

Mrs Turia says it may be hard to sway National, given the pressure being whipped up by the ACT Party and the Coastal Coalition.

If the tests are not modified, she told Waatea News, the party will seek amendments once the bill is passed.
