Holiday bonus for accountancy staff

4:40 pm on 3 February 2011

An accountancy firm in Auckland is giving its 120 staff an extra day's holiday to make up for the fact Anzac Day and Waitangi Day fall on existing days off this year.

Hayes Knight says it believes long weekends are important to its staff, and are part of the New Zealand way of life.

The change follows public controversy about the loss of days off work this year, since Waitangi Day falls on the weekend, and Anzac Day coincides with Easter Monday.

Prime Minister John Key had previously dismissed any change as unworkable, but now says he would be willing to take advice on how switching such public holidays to Mondays could work.
